OUR WORLD FESTIVAL OF MUSIC returns for a second exciting year with free performances at Kitchener City Hall Civic Square, starting at 7pm. This year OUR WORLD is proud to present 3 of the finest exponents of world music working in Canada today.

HILARIO DURAN & PERSPECTIVA

JUNO Award winning Cuban pianist Hilario Duran performs with his Havana based ensemble Perspectiva. In his homeland Hilario developed a reputation as a Latin jazz performer of the first order before joining forces with Jane Bunnett on her JUNO Award winning Spirits of Havana and eventually moved to Canada. Following his 2005 JUNO Award for New Danzon, Hilario was a nominee again in 2006 for Encuentro en La Habana, recorded in Cuba with Perspectiva. The Encuentro cd is full of spontaneity and the joy of the re-union, a collaboration which will renewed at the OUR WORLD festival.

ADAM SOLOMON & TIKISA

Born in Mombasa, Kenya, Adam was a co-founder of Canada's great pan-African band, the Afronubians. Adam is also a member of Canada’s celebrated, JUNO Award winning African Guitar Summit. Adam's style of guitar playing fuses the Mississippi delta blues style of BB King and Muddy Waters while highlighting the African blues style. With his band Tikisa, Adam creates a unique sound that combines his blues influences with traditional and modern coastal East African rhythms. A sound that is full of energy and a delight to hear outdoors at OUR WORLD.

DAVID BUCHBINDER QUARTET

4 time JUNO Award nominee, David Buchbinder is a trumpeter, composer and cultural inventor. He has been involved in the creation and presentation of world music and jazz since 1987, through the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and his creation of ASHKENAZ: A Festival of New Yiddish Culture. He is involved in cross-cultural experimentation, exploring the intersection of the musical cultures of Jews, Arabs and others, with the Arab/Jewish/Jazz fusion ensemble Medina. All of these rich musical influences will be heard when David performs at OUR WORLD.

Tapestry Citizenship Court

June 13th. 12:30 p.m.

The celebration of community and place is important to us in a global culture that is often transient. Tapestry illustrates that cultural perspectives are championed, and that through maintaining vital traditions we can establish our own roots into the community.

Once again we invite you to share in this identification and celebration of place through Tapestry 2007: Join new Canadians as they take the oath of citizenship, a proud moment for all of us to be able to appreciate our common values:

Equality—We respect everyone’s rights. Everyone has the right to speak out and express ideas that others might disagree with.

Respect for cultural differences—We try to understand and appreciate the cultures, customs and traditions of all Canadians, whether they were born in Canada or came here from another country.

Freedom—As Canadians, we enjoy basic freedoms, such as freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of peaceful assembly.

Peace—We are proud of our non-violent society and our international role as peacekeepers.

Law and order—We respect democratic decision making and the “rule of law.” We promote due process so that the courts and the police treat everyone fairly and reasonably.

Motivated by Harold Pinter’s 2005 Nobel Prize lecture, Art, Truth and Politics, this collective creation explores issues of war, death, injustice, mass media and power.

The four cast members of Pinteresque have built mutual relationships with community members who came to Canada as war refugees. The show is the result of an eight-week creation workshop based on actors’ notes, journals, and reflections around these relationships. Using movement, dance, storytelling, ritual, live testimony, video projection and original music, this production portrays the hardships of a family’s journey seeking refuge after escaping a war torn country. The show raises questions around the politics of power with emphasis on the US conduct in the war against terror. Questions around Iraq war, AbouGraib Prison and the manipulation of media are also explored through physical movement.

This production is a dynamic multidisciplinary movement-based performance that endeavours to transform the audience from mere spectator to responsible witness.

Filmmaker Terrance Odette, and composer Nick Storring are also contributing to the piece through its video and soundscapes.

Amanda’s debut album, SOLA, captures the heart and draws you into the moment with her sensuous, soulful voice, accompanied by soothing guitar and spellbinding violin under a gentle pulse of percussion. The collection of original and traditional songs has beautiful lyrics sung in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
